About the Artist

Joanna MacGovern

Welcome to Floating Seed, a space I created where creativity, mindfulness, and the beauty of traditional crafts come together.

I am passionate about the ancient Japanese art of suminagashi, or “floating ink” and Western Marbling. For me, marbling is more than just decoration — it is a practice of calm, flow, and presence. Each piece is created by allowing ink or paint to drift across the surface of water, gently guided by breath and movement. The results are always unique, just like moments in life.

Alongside suminagashi, I also explore the rich tradition of Western marbling. This technique, with its roots in Europe, allows for more structured patterns — from the fluid swirls of the nonpareil to the precise combed designs seen in antique bookbinding. I love the dialogue between East and West: one emphasising simplicity and flow, the other precision and rhythm. Both share the same magic — the transformation of ink and water into one-of-a-kind patterns.

Through Floating Seed, I create marbled papers, textiles, and objects that carry this sense of serenity and craftsmanship into everyday life. From notebooks and cards to silk scarves, pens, and homeware, each item is designed to be both beautiful and meaningful.

I also love to share the practice of marbling with others. My beginner-friendly workshops in suminagashi and western marbling offer a chance to slow down, connect with creativity, and discover the joy of watching patterns unfold.

The name Floating Seed reflects both the lightness of ink drifting on water and the idea of creativity as a seed — something small and fragile at first, yet capable of growth, transformation, and beauty.

Thank you for being here and supporting handmade, thoughtful work. I hope my creations inspire you to pause, breathe, and find wonder in the simple flow of ink on water.
