Larousse Gastronomique published in 1938 with leather spine and green marbled cover and end papers. Iconic piece of gastronomic history.
Iconic Larousse Gastronomique dating from 1938, rare to find with a leather spine and green marbled cover and end papers. Passionate about preserving the endangered heritage craft of paper marbling I found this in a Brocante in the Cognac region of South West France.
There is a 7cm split at the top of the spine and the inside front cover and the book has been well used and loved.
The text is in French with 1087 pages starting with the definition of Abaise, a patisserie term and ending with Zwieback, a kind of biscuit found in all boulangeries. There are lots of black and white photos and illustrations showing the ingredients and utensils and some colour photos showing the dishes. There is also a newspaper cutting tucked in one of the pages from August 1944 giving news of bombings in Paris in the Second World War and on the reverses the history and production of Cognac. This would be a fantastic piece of iconic French culinary history to own.
